September 2007

Dear Andrea,

September is my favorite month. In many parts of the country it signals the end of summer, the beginning of autumn and school.  But I love the slow change from summer to fall that we are usually blessed with here in the Northwest. The days are warm, but the nights are a little cooler. In my mind September represents the last chances for good weather camping and hiking. It also marks my wedding anniversary with my late husband Jeff. On the 26th I will celebrate what would have been our eighth anniversary. In the past we would have just finished enjoying a week of camping attached to the Labor Day holiday.

Given the past this edition of Soaring Higher represents my desire to hold on to summer and to memories, and to sharing what I've learned from my experiences.

Today marks the 6th anniversary of 9/11. Take a moment to send a few good thoughts to the families of those who died and to our soliders around the world. Think about what blessings are yours because you live in the United States.

Fall Group Program

Are you stuck? Ready to let go of old patterns? Interested in health counseling, but watching the pocket book? Maybe you are looking for a way to connect with more people? Planning Ahead

But in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.  ~ Ben Franklin

Thinking about the end of our lives can be uncomfortable and, therefore, downright easy to avoid. We often have good intentions to discuss it with family or get something in writing, but it can easily get moved to the bottom of the list when competing with other things. "Hmm ... Planning my will or planning vacation?" But the fact of the matter is, for most people, having a will is necessary now. It provides an excellent way to show caring and thoughtfulness for your loved ones after you are gone.

If you are young, single and do not own anything, you might be able to get away without drafting up a will. But what about your record collection? Maybe you want to leave your favorite necklace to your best friend? Even if your personal items have little value on eBay or Craig's List, they may have immense sentimental value to your best friend, lover or family members. By planning ahead you can show you care from beyond the grave. And it just may stop any squabbling over who gets your mission rocking chair! If you are in a committed long term relationship, but not legally married, if you own anything of any value or if you have children or pets that will need looking after once you are gone, it is imperative that you create a will. Otherwise state law makes the decisions, by-passing partners by giving custody and/or your possessions to next-of-kin.

Are you hoping to give life or restore sight with the precious gift of organ or tissue donations after you are gone? Even if you have your driver's license coded for donation, if you haven't spoken with your next-of-kin about your decision it may not happen. After all, they may need to sign the paperwork at the hospital or funeral home in order to give final approval (this varies state by state). If you haven't discussed it with them, they are highly unlikely to think of looking at your driver's license in the middle of their grief. To make it even easier you can commit to being a donor online. More and more hospitals are referring to online donor registrations. In fact, in the Northwest, you are also given choices regarding your desire to donate. Give your entire body to science? Just your eyes? It takes a few short minutes, but could save or change someone's life for the better.

And what about your wishes for a funeral or memorial service? Do you want to be buried or cremated? Have you always wanted Amazing Grace sung at your service?  There are a million little things to do and think about when someone dies. Having even just a few of these outlined in your will can save your loved ones from having to think about so many decisions during an already emotional time with the added comfort that they are following your wishes.

You may plan to discuss these things when you are older or if you happen to get ill.  However, death often happens unexpectedly. Even if you have forewarning it is much easier to talk about such issues when you are not mired down by the emotions of a chronic or terminal illness. Regardless of your health or age, sharing your wishes with those close to you is important and putting them in a legal document can save your loved ones the time, energy and additional grief that comes from being unprepared.  For more information on Oregon and Washington laws regarding this topic follow the links. If you live in another state contact your state bar association for more information.

Raw and Cooling Salad

Salad freshens without enfeebling and fortifies without irritating.
~ Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin

Why is it that in summer we naturally crave more fresh and raw foods? There is something to be said about eating seasonally. When the temperatures rise, these foods have a cooling effect on the body. Their lightness and high water, fiber and vitamin content work together to act as our internal air conditioning. At this time of year we also need less dense, high-energy food because we get so much energy from being outside in the fresh air and sunshine.

There is no better season than summer to have fun creating your own fresh, tasty, creative salad combinations. By simply tossing together several of your favorite raw veggies, naked or with a light dressing, you have a perfect meal for a hot summer's day.

Try your favorite leafy lettuce with various sliced, diced or grated veggies. The possible combinations are endless. Fresh herbs are a wonderful option to mix in, as they are packed full of flavor. Experiment with adding diverse forms of protein to your salads, such as nuts, seeds, beans, tofu, fish or poultry. Pick up a light and healthy dressing at your local health food store, or mix up something easy, like lemon juice, black pepper and olive/flax oil.

Before summer is completely gone, now is a great opportunity to try a new vegetable from your farmer's market. What are some creative flavors you've never tried before? Fennel and mint? Daikon radish and arugula? Summer squash with watercress? I like adding cilantro, jicama and/or tomatillos to change it up. Whatever you choose, have fun with your food! Eating healthy is anything but boring. Stay cool and be sure to enjoy these last moments of summer!
