« Shopping and Chronic Illness »

The Signs of a Shopaholic

According to an article from WebMD, the signs of a shopping addicition are as follows:

  • Spending over budget. Spending regardless of the financial impact, disregard for budget.
  • Compulsive buying. Going to the store for one thing and coming home with a million things that weren't on the list.
  • It's a chronic. It is not a one time spree. This is an ongoing problem.
  • Hiding the problem. Having secret credit card accounts. Hiding purchses or receipts. Lying about amounts purchased or spent.
  • A vicious circle. Guilt often ensues, but returning an items at the store often opens them up to another chane to shop.
  • Impaired relationships. Guilt, broken trust, the behavior consuming all of their time. Relationships usually begin to suffer for one reason or another related to the addiction.
  • Clear consequences. A pattern and loss of control signals a serious problem.

When an addiction is present, shopping is frequently used as a result of negative feelings. So in the case of chronic illness shopping may be a pick-me-up after a stressful doctor's appointment or online shopping may be a way to escape feelings of fear or sadness associated with being chronically ill.

Some ways to assist if compulsive shopping is becoming a problem for you or your partner is to first admit that there is a problem. Second, get rid of checkbooks and credit cards. these only make it easier and more tempting to over spend.  Then create a self-proposed ban on shopping. If this is beyond the person in question you may need to have someone else impose the ban or even find professional help.  A shopping addiction can be just as serious and detrimental to a family as an alcohol, drug or gambling addiction. There is even a 12-Step Program called Debtors Anonymous available. Either way it is very important to find other healthy ways to feel good. Counseling for the ill parter, the couple and even the family is often helpful during a struggle with chronic illness and can serve to bring people closer together through the ordeal, instead of isolating each person in their fears and the stories running in their head.

I apologize for the lapse in time since my last post. I have been experiencing some intense lower back pain which has made sitting at the computer for any period of time extremely hard.

That's understandable that cash makes us disembarrass. But how to act when somebody does not have cash? The one way only is to get the credit loans and just auto loan.
