« Introducing Remembering Self for the Well Spouse*

I have been brainstorming and planning this blog for a few months. I have wanted to help well spouses and partners for several years, so I am excited to finally bring this to fruition. First, a little about me, I married my college sweetheart, Jeff, who was diagnosed with the auto-immune disease Lupus about 6 months after we began dating. We were together for 8 ½ years before he passed away (you can read more under About). During his illness I was desperate for others that understood what I was going through. I never found anyone. Although I had internet access, there were no resources in this area at the time. The Well Spouse Association, although in existence, did not have a local chapter or large online presence at the time. Blogs and online forums were just barely taking off. Now there are more resources, but still not a lot, so I thought what better way to turn my experience into a positive than to focus helping other well spouses and partners! I enjoy writing, so blogging is a wonderful addition to my work.

A large focus will be placed on self-care. This alone covers many areas, so things that will be addressed are nutrition, stress management, expectations, spirituality, relationship with partner, friends and family, work-life balance etc.. There will also be a focus on cultivating joy and practicing gratitude despite life’s circumstances. Some of this will incorporate the concept of mindfulness and references to laughter since I am also a Laughter Yoga Teacher. Some other things I hope to address in future posts are resources, books, and coping skills. And of course, finances, insurance, wills, disability etc. There are many, many topics! I will also get you, the reader, involved through comments and surveys. What are you struggling with, what have you learned? Did you and your partner just have a major success? These are things I and other readers will want to know about.

One lesson that I began learning when Jeff became very ill was that I had no control over anything except myself. That I was solely responsible for the way I felt or reacted. This is not an easy revelation and did not come overnight, but I hope to share and pass this along to my readers.

For now the plan is to post M/W/F and occasionally in-between, but I am committing to three days a week. Stating it here will help hold me accountable! In the meantime, feel free to add a comment or sign the guest book and tell us a little about yourself.
